3 proposals to advance human development: Charting our interdependent future
On February 25-26, the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings convened a group of over 40 participants for a two-day workshop in Washington, DC on “New Partnerships for Growth Research in Africa.” The workshop brought together AGI’s six African partner institutions: the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (Nairobi); Nigerian Institute for Social and Economic Research (Ibadan); Economic and Social Research Consortium (Senegal); Economic Policy Research Center (Uganda); Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (Ghana); and the Development Policy Research Unit (South Africa); along with additional international research and development organizations. The workshop offered a forum for discussion on areas of common interest and overlapping areas of research related to structural transformation in Africa. Participants sought to develop potential partnerships and mutually agreeable work plans to implement over the next several years that produce clear and constructive policy recommendations for U.S., African, and international policymakers.
In addition to the six African research institution partners, participating organizations included the African Economic Research Consortium, the African Development Bank, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the International Growth Centre (London), the Global Development Network, the United Nations University – World Institute for Development Economics Research, the Africa Progress Panel, and others. Additionally, several foundations and key organizations who play a leading role in Africa’s development participated, including the International Development Research Centre (Canada), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and The Ford Foundation.
