Turkey has increasingly become a challenge for NATO.

Macron’s willingness to humor Trump tended to paper over some of the disagreements that were bubbling underneath the surface between the two countries. The overall lesson is that using different means of approaching Trump don’t seem to be effective at changing his mind on policy issues.

The general sense is that this [NATO] meeting has been curtailed to try to limit disagreements as we have seen at previous summits.

I think what Bolton says resonates with people because it is something that has worried people since Trump took office and there is concern that he would feel less constrained in a second term, and could actually do something. Given that you have someone who was working very closely with the president over the last year expressing that concern himself, I think it is bringing back to the fore the possibility that this is something that could happen in a Trump second term.
