On April 13, the Brookings Foreign Policy program hosted President Alexander Stubb of Finland as part of the Alan and Jane Batkin International Leaders Forum. A long-standing partner of the United States, Finland became a frontline ally when it joined NATO in 2023 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Stubb has served as president since 2024, and has previously served as the country’s prime minister, finance minister, European affairs and trade minister, and foreign minister, and as a member of the European Parliament.
Stubb engaged in a conversation with Constanze Stelzenmüller, director of the Center on the United States and Europe and Fritz Stern chair in transatlantic relations at Brookings, on rebalancing world order in an age of fragmentation, U.S.-European relations, Finland’s approach to security and societal resilience, and other topics.
