Anxiety, nostalgia, and mistrust: Findings from the 2015 American Values Survey

One year ahead of the 2016 general election, an extensive new national survey of more than 2,500 Americans explores opinions about issue priorities and candidates, examines attitudes about racial discrimination and the fairness of the criminal justice system, and reveals widespread pessimism about the state of the economy and concerns about economic inequality.

On November 17, Governance Studies at Brookings and PRRI hosted the release of PRRI’s sixth annual American Values Survey (AVS) featuring a panel of experts who discussed Americans’ views on a variety of political and cultural issues. Additional topics covered by the survey are levels of trust in public institutions, evolving perceptions and composition of the Tea Party, the relationship between religious affiliation and political attitudes, views of immigrants, and opinions about whether white Americans—and white men in particular—are losing influence amid the rapid demographic changes in the country.
