Although recognition of the importance of computer science education is expanding around the globe, most countries have been slow to adopt it. Many school systems face the dual challenges of insufficient numbers of qualified teachers and students who may not have the opportunity to develop an interest in computer science. For instance, less than half of high schools in the United States offer courses in the subject. Yet, computer science can lead to higher rates of college enrollment, improve student’s problem-solving abilities, and prepare students for the future of work and active citizenship.
To address core challenges, the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings has launched research to examine how to scale up and improve computer science education around the world.
Throughout 2021, CUE will examine education systems from diverse regions and circumstances that have implemented computer science education programs to varying levels of success. These case studies will culminate in a seminal report in the fall of 2021 that will identify the most promising ways to engage decisionmakers, teachers, and students in quality computer science education.
