Paul Nitze, long-time American strategist diplomat, passed away on October 19, 2004. One of the cornerstones of Nitze’s legacy is NSC-68, the State Department study that he directed on the verge of Korean War which urged military deterrence of the Soviet threat.

NSC-68 was important not only for American strategy but also for Japan, and may have affected the course of Japan’s post-World War II development more than the Japanese “Peace Constitution,” CNAPS Visiting Fellow Tomohiko Taniguchi argues.
