Ryan Hass appointed Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ryan Hass has been appointed the Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies. He concurrently holds the Michael H. Armacost Chair in Foreign Policy Studies and is a senior fellow with the Center for East Asia Policy Studies (CEAP) and the John L. Thornton China Center. Hass has held the Koo Chair on an interim basis since April 2020.

Hass joined Brookings in September 2017 as part of the inaugural class of David M. Rubenstein Fellows. Previously, Hass served as the director for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia at the National Security Council staff as part of a 15-year career in the Foreign Service. Hass’s research and analysis on Taiwan includes a monthly essay series for the Taipei Times. He also co-leads the Brookings Foreign Policy Global China initiative. Hass recently published a sole-authored book about U.S.-China relations, “Stronger: Adapting America’s China Strategy in an Age of Competitive Interdependence,” and the co-edited volume “Global China: Assessing China’s Growing Role in the World.”

The Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies was established in 2013 through a generous endowment gift from the Koo family in order to sustain long-term research and analysis on Taiwan and U.S. policy. Richard Bush held the Chair from 2013 to 2020. The Chair is housed in the Center for East Asia Policy Studies, founded in 1998 as the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies to promote research and analysis of policy issues facing East Asia and the United States. Under Solís’s leadership, CEAP senior fellows conduct research on the political, economic, security and social issues facing East Asia, and sponsor an array of policy-oriented seminars, discussions, and publications.
