Brookings President Michael H. Armacost Recognized by Japan-America Society for Distinguished Service

April 3, 2002

The Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth (JASDFW) will award Brookings Institution President Michael H. Armacost its 2002 Sun & Star Legacy Award. JASDFW gives the award annually to recognize a distinguished leader who has enhanced the relationship between the people of Japan and the United States.

The award will be presented to Armacost at an official ceremony on April 9 in Dallas.

“The Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth does important work in forging better understanding and stronger links between the people of the Metroplex area and Japan,” Armacost said. “I am honored to receive the Sun & Star Legacy Award from this prestigious and influential society.”

Armacost has served as president of the Brookings Institution since 1995. He is a former U.S. ambassador to Japan and to the Philippines, and has served as undersecretary of State for political affairs. He was also a senior policymaker at the National Security Council and the Department of Defense.

From 1993 to 1995, Armacost was a distinguished senior fellow and visiting professor at Stanford University’s Asia/Pacific Research Center. He has been given the President’s Distinguished Service Award, the Defense Department’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award, and the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award. Armacost has written three books. The most recent, Friends or Rivals? The Insider’s Account of U.S.-Japan Relations, was published in 1996.

JASDFW is a non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to promoting positive U.S.-Japan relations in north Texas. The Society provides a regional forum to explore the U.S.-Japan relationship and encourage interaction among people from Japan and America.

Past recipients of the Sun & Star Legacy Award include Senator Daniel K. Inouye (2001); Ambassador Thomas S. Foley (2000); Ambassador Hisashi Owada (1999); and Ambassador Walter F. Mondale (1998).
