Five rising democracies: Trends at home and abroad

February 17, 2016

Over the last thirty years, five emerging democratic powers—India, Brazil, South Africa, Turkey and Indonesia—have moved toward greater democracy and development with varied success. They also have sent mixed signals when it comes to contributing to the international liberal order. In Five Rising Democracies and the Fate of the International Liberal Order, Ted Piccone examines the controversial rise of these five diverse countries, takes an in-depth look at how they exercise influence on issues of democracy and human rights abroad, and proposes areas of convergence among established and emerging democracies.

The following slides and rollover text depict the domestic progress they’ve made since their respective turning points toward liberalization and their foreign policy records on support for the international liberal order.
