The integration of the Muslim population into Europe poses a variety of daunting challenges, particularly when viewed against the backdrop of rising Islamic fundamentalism and terrorist plots emanating from Europe. In a landmark book, Integrating Islam: Political and Religious Challenges in Contemporary France, former Brookings scholars Jonathan Laurence and Justin Vaisse offer extensive and original insights on the largest Muslim population in Europe. The book examines the complex reality of Muslim integration and reveals a population that shows surprising progress toward integration.

On September 13 Christopher Caldwell, senior editor at The Weekly Standard and a frequent contributor to The New York Times Magazine and The Financial Times, joined Laurence and Vaisse for a discussion of the book.
