President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping participated in a summit meeting November 15 in Woodside, California in which U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns participated. This event offered a unique opportunity to gain insight from a participant in the talks about the impact of the summit on the direction of U.S.-China relations. Will any stabilization of relations resulting from the summit endure? What issues will animate the relationship in the year ahead?

On December 15, the Foreign Policy program at Brookings hosted Ambassador Burns for a keynote address to analyze these questions and provide an on-the-ground perspective from Beijing on the state of U.S.-China relations. Following his address, Ambassador Burns engaged in conversation with Brookings Senior Fellow and Director Ryan Hass and Fellow Patricia Kim.
