In 2005, Woodrow Wilson Center Press and Johns Hopkins University Press launched the first edition of Energy and Security: Toward a New Foreign Policy Strategy, a policy primer focusing on all aspects of energy policy. Since the launch of the book, the energy policy landscape has drastically changed due to new tensions in the Middle East, the shale boom in the U.S. (and similar prospects around the world), and accidents heightening concerns around dominant energy sources including nuclear power. Building on the 2005 edition, the editors have updated Energy and Security for 2014, providing new insight on the revolution in shale gas and oil, new energy frontiers in deepwater regions and the Arctic, rising agenda of safety concerns, energy poverty and modernizing infrastructure and climate security.

On February 5, the Energy Security Initiative (ESI) at Brookings will host David Goldwyn, Jan Kalicki, Phillip Van Niekerk and Charles McPherson to share their views on the new edition and address topics such as energy governance and transparency and new developments in African energy. Senior Fellow Charles Ebinger, director of ESI, will provide introductory remarks and then moderate a discussion. After the program, our speakers will take audience questions.
