Rachel Stern

Former Brookings Expert, Assistant Professor of Law and Political Science – University of California Berkeley

Rachel Stern was a nonresident fellow in the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings, and is an assistant professor of law and political science at the University California Berkeley. Her research examines law in mainland China and Hong Kong, focusing on the relationships between legal institution building, political space and social mobilization. Stern is the author of “Environmental Litigation in China: A Study in Political Ambivalence” (Cambridge University Press, 2013), and she is currently writing a series of articles on the development of China’s legal profession.
