China and the Olympics

China recently announced thwarted terrorism plots as protests against the country’s hosting of the Olympics continue across the world. China expert Cheng Li joins Diane Rehm to discuss these issues and others facing the August games in Beijing.

Diane Rehm, host: China is reporting it thwarted a terror plot against the Olympics. What do we know?

Cheng Li: Chinese government officials announced yesterday that they caught two terrorist plots. Both were related to Uighurs in Xinjiang, and this is from the Muslim population in that province. They arrested 35 people for the first plot and 10 people for the second one. Both are linked, they believe, to the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, which the U.S. government also considers a terrorist group.
