Washington, D.C. – Constanze Stelzenmüller, an expert on German, European, and transatlantic foreign and security policy and strategy, will join the Brookings Institution in November 2014 as the inaugural Robert Bosch senior fellow, Brookings President Strobe Talbott and Kurt W. Liedtke, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, announced today. Stelzenmüller will be affiliated with the Foreign Policy Program’s Center on the United States and Europe (CUSE).
The Bosch senior fellow position has been established in collaboration with the Robert Bosch Stiftung to explore a broad range of issues shaping Germany and the critical role it plays in Europe’s economic, political, and security future. The Robert Bosch Stiftung is one of Europe’s largest foundations associated with a private company and invests approximately 70 million euros annually in supporting projects in the fields of international relations, education, society and culture, as well as health and science. Since its founding in 1964, the foundation has fostered international understanding and cooperation, German-American relations, and the consolidation of the transatlantic partnership as an alliance and a community of values.
“We are delighted that Dr. Stelzenmüller will join the Foreign Policy program at Brookings as the first Bosch senior fellow, and we are grateful to the Bosch Stiftung for its generosity in helping to create this position,” said Ted Piccone, acting vice president and director of Foreign Policy at Brookings. “Constanze combines an impressive record of insightful research and analysis on German foreign and security policy and transatlantic relations with deep knowledge and experience in human rights and international law.”
Stelzenmüller will join Brookings from the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), where she is currently a senior transatlantic fellow and directs the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program. Her areas of expertise include: transatlantic relations, German foreign policy, NATO, the European Union’s foreign, security, and defense policy, international law, and human rights.
Previously Stelzenmüller served as the director of GMF’s Berlin office. From 1994 until 2005, she was an editor in the political section of the German weekly Die Zeit, where she had also served as defense and international security editor and covered human rights issues and humanitarian crises. Stelzenmüller holds a doctorate in law from the University of Bonn (1992), a masters degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1988), and a first state examination in law from the University of Bonn (1985). Her essays and articles, in both German and English, have appeared in a wide range of publications, including Foreign Affairs, Internationale Politik, the Financial Times, the International New York Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung. She is a frequent commentator on American and European radio and television, including, among others, Presseclub (ARD), National Public Radio and the BBC. Stelzenmüller chairs the academic advisory board of the German Foundation on Peace Research (DSF) and is a former chair of the German section of Women in International Security.
