Exploring Korea’s product diversification model: Insights for developing East Asia
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Brookings Institution announced today that Brahima Sangafowa Coulibaly has been appointed Vice President of Global Economy and Development. Dr. Coulibaly most recently served as a Senior Fellow and Director of the Africa Growth Initiative (AGI) at Brookings, where he led a team of scholars and research and administrative staff to establish a strategic guidepost for the Africa program, publishing widely on various topics in macroeconomics, development, international finance, monetary economics, and trade.
“Since joining Brookings in 2017 as the head of AGI, Coul has proven to be a leading expert on the African continent and international development writ large, and has successfully led and developed AGI into one of our premier efforts,” said Brookings Institution President John R. Allen. “Those of us fortunate to have worked with Coul know that he is an exceptional scholar, leader and colleague, and I am thrilled he is transitioning into this critically important senior role.”
Dr. Coulibaly joined Brookings in 2017 from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, where he was chief economist and head of the emerging market and developing economies group. In that capacity, he oversaw the institution’s work on emerging markets and developing economies, provided intellectual leadership on economic and financial issues facing these economies, and often represented the Federal Reserve in international meetings and working groups on relevant topics. Dr. Coulibaly joined the Federal Reserve System in 2004 as a junior economist. He was promoted to senior economist in 2007, to principal economist in 2009, and to chief in 2013.
Dr. Coulibaly has also taught economics and international finance at Georgetown University, the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia, and the University of Michigan. He holds a Ph.D. and a Master’s in economics, both from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics from the University of California at Berkeley.
Founded in 2006, the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings aims to shape the policy debate on how to improve global economic cooperation and fight global poverty and sources of social stress. With a long-term vision of strong, sustainable, and balanced growth for a prosperous world, the program undertakes high-quality research, identifies target audiences and policy opportunities, and shares its findings to inform new policy solutions.
Dr. Coulibaly will begin his new role at Brookings in June 2020.
