Geoff Boeing

Nonresident Senior Fellow – Brookings Metro

Geoff Boeing is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern California and the Chair of USC’s Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Analysis. He is also the Director of USC’s Urban Data Lab and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Dr. Boeing’s research explores the spatial outcomes of urban planning through network analysis, geospatial data science, machine learning, and AI. It has won several awards, including the Nobel Sustainability Award, the Stough-Johansson Springer Award, and the AAG SAM Emerging Scholar Award. His work is regularly featured in the media—including The Economist, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post—and he has presented it at the Venice Biennale of Architecture and in keynote talks around the world.

Dr. Boeing has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including Urban Studies, Annals of the AAG, Geographical Analysis, and Environment and Planning B, and has published his research in journals across scientific and policy disciplines, including The Lancet Global Health, the Journal of the American Planning Association, Applied Network Science, and Physical Review Letters. He also developed and maintains the OSMnx street network modeling software—which has become a standard tool in industry and academia—and he has consulted for many planning, policymaking, and public health organizations.
