When the 119th Congress convenes, Republicans will hold majorities in both the House and Senate for the first time in six years. Majority leaders in both chambers are already formulating legislative objectives for the early months of the year, including plans on taxes, immigration enforcement, and energy policy. Other items—such as reviewing President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees and unfinished work on government spending bills—await them as well. With narrow majorities in both chambers, Republicans will have to navigate not just differences with Democrats but also divisions within their own party to make progress on this agenda.
On January 9, join Governance Studies at Brookings for a webinar featuring a panel of experts who will discuss the 119th Congress and what lies ahead.
