Taiwan is a major economic partner of the United States, and bilateral consultations and exchanges help maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Western Pacific. In addition to its relationship with the United States, Taiwan is a responsible member of the international community with capacity to assist in disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, and global public health efforts.

On May 21, the Center for East Asia Policy Studies and the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings hosted U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan A. Thornton for remarks on U.S.-Taiwan relations and key issues in the East Asia region. Brookings Senior Fellow Jeffrey A. Bader moderated the discussion.
