Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation

On October 21-October 23, 2009, The Brookings Institution and the China Institute of Strategy and Management hosted a major Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation, bringing together leaders in government, business, NGO, and the academic world.

Held in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing, conference featured keynote addresses by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Li Keqiang also addressed members of the conference in closed, smaller group sessions. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, and John Holdren, President Barack Obama’s Science and Technology Adviser, addressed the gathering via video.

Distinguished speakers who delivered remarks during the conference included, among the others, Assistant Secretary of Energy David Sandalow; Chairman of China’s National Energy Administration Zhang Guobao; U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman; China Institute of Strategy and Management Chairman Zheng Bijian, and Brookings Chairman John L. Thornton. Conference participants included top U.S. and Chinese officials, business leaders, academics, scientists and representatives of environmental NGOs.

The conference addressed a wide range of issues, including Sino-U.S. cooperation on clean coal, renewable energy and electric vehicles.
