Herb Kohl, a four-term senator from Wisconsin, recently announced that he will not be running for reelection in 2012. Kohl is one of eight senators to announce retirement this year, six of whom are Democrats.
Democrats believe that these early retirement notices will give the party ample time to find strong candidates for the open seats, while Republicans are saying these openings give them an opportunity to win back seats. On May 18, expert William Galston participated in a live web chat and discussed what the retirement of long-term senators means for the two parties and who potential candidates will be for the open seats.
