Gender inequality in political representation remains a global struggle. Closer home within India, this tension was highlighted against the backdrop of the Urban Local Body elections in Nagaland. Given these recent developments, Brookings India, in collaboration with the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi organised a private by-invitation-only gathering of experts across sectors to discuss the challenges, potential solutions to mark International Women’s Day.

Shamika Ravi, Fellow, Brookings India, gave a presentation titled “Women and Electoral Politics: the good, the bad and the ugly” which discussed findings from her co-authored working paper “Why So Few Women In Politics: Evidence from India“.
