Are Syrian Islamists moving to counterbalance Al-Qaeda? Will it last?

Charles Lister explains that the recent merger of Ahrar al-Sham and Suqor al-Sham underlines the re-assertion of Ahrar al-Sham’s dominance inside Syria, as the tacit alliance between Syrian insurgent groups and Jabhat al-Nusra has been both very valuable and highly damaging to the opposition’s overall campaign against the Assad regime. He concludes that this merger is an opening to the West to engage more effectively with a broader swath of the armed opposition in order to ensure it remains devoted to the values that we want pursued and achieved in Syria.
