We are pleased to announce the appointment of new leaders in the Brown Center on Education Policy at the Brookings Institution. William Galston, the Ezra K. Zilkha Chair and a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies, has been named the interim director of the Center, Mike Hansen has been appointed as deputy director of the Center and a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies, and Stephanie Cellini has been appointed as a Nonresident Senior Fellow in Governance Studies.
Galston is a former domestic policy advisor to President Bill Clinton. He served in the Clinton Administration from 1993 to 1995 and provided advice on education policy as well as other domestic issues. Prior to his appointment at Brookings in 2006, Galston served as the Saul Stern Professor and Acting Dean at the School of Public Policy of the University of Maryland. He was the founding director of the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at that university. He is the author of eight books and more than 100 articles on public policy, political theory, and American politics. He currently writes a weekly column for the Wall Street Journal, and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004.
Mike Hansen comes to Brookings from the American Institutes for Research. There, he was a principal researcher at AIR and an affiliated researcher with the National Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research. He has completed research on teacher quality, value-added measurement, STEM learning, policy evaluation, and school accountability. He has published work in leading peer-reviewed journals such as American Economic Review, Economica, Education Finance and Policy, and American Educational Research Journal, among others.
Professor Stephanie Cellini of George Washington University has joined the Center as a Nonresident Senior Fellow. She currently is an Associate Professor of Public Policy and Economics at the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration. Her research specialties include education policy, school finance, and for-profit institutions of higher education. Her work has been published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, and the American Economic Journal, among others.
The Brown Center Chalkboard launched in January 2013 as a weekly series of new analyses of policy, research, and practice relevant to U.S. education.
In July 2015, the Chalkboard was re-launched as a Brookings blog in order to offer more frequent, timely, and diverse content. Contributors to both the original paper series and current blog are committed to bringing evidence to bear on the debates around education policy in America.
