Alberto Portugal

Alberto Portugal is a Senior Economist currently working at the Macro, Trade, and Investment Global Practice at the World Bank. In more than a decade at the World Bank, he has provided policy advice to governments of several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean; Eastern Europe; South, Central and East Asia; the Middle East; and Africa, on a wide range of topics that include: trade policy, export competitiveness, diversification, productivity, global value chains, regional integration, special economic zones, current account imbalances, and investment attraction. Previously, he worked at the IDA Resource Mobilization Unit and the DEC Research Group at the World Bank. He is the author of several articles published in peer-reviewed refereed journals, books, and reports.  He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Geneva and a Master’s degree in International Economics from the Graduate Institute (IHEID) in Geneva, Switzerland.
