The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have depleted our military leaving our nation badly positioned to respond to any potential crises looming on the horizon. While our military superiority is unmatched, our capacity is at the breaking point, jeopardizing both domestic and international security.
The next President should take the following steps to increase military capacity and readiness:
- expand ground forces now as the United States needs at least 100,000 additional active duty soldiers and Marines
- cut Defense Department waste through carefully crafted changes involving electronics and operational reforms
- improve recruitment with creative ways to “grow the force” by 25,000 or more a year without a draft, including promising American citizenship to qualified foreigners who enlist in the armed forces
Opportunity 08 aims to help 2008 presidential candidates and the public focus on critical issues facing the nation, presenting policy ideas on a wide array of domestic and foreign policy questions. The project is committed to providing both independent policy solutions and background material on issues of concern to voters.
