Exploring Korea’s product diversification model: Insights for developing East Asia
William Easterly, a distinguished economist and development expert, has joined Brookings as a visiting fellow, Brookings President Strobe Talbott announced today.
Easterly is a professor of economics at New York University (NYU), jointly with Africa House, and is co-director of NYU’s Development Research Institute. He is the author of The White Man’s Burden: How the West’s Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good, and The Elusive Quest for Growth: Economists’ Adventures and Misadventures in the Tropics, among other publications.
Easterly joins the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings and will focus on the historical determinants of development and success stories.
“We are delighted to welcome Bill to Brookings as he turns his attention to examining what works in development, which will enhance our understanding of successful cases and how those might be applied to help lift more people out of poverty,” said Lael Brainard, vice president and director, Global Economy and Development, and the holder of the Bernard L. Schwartz Chair in International Economics.
Easterly brings a wealth of experience to Brookings’s global development research. He spent 16 years as a research economist at the World Bank and worked in most areas of the developing world, most heavily in Africa, Latin America, and Russia. Easterly received his Ph.D. in economics at MIT, and is an associate editor of numerous journals, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Economic Growth, the Journal of Development Economics, the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, and the Journal of Comparative Economics.
Easterly will remain at Brookings through the summer of 2008.
