Jeffrey Frankel, Expert on International Trade, Joins Brookings as a Visiting Fellow

Jeffrey A. Frankel, a former member of the Council of Economic Advisers, joins the Brookings Institution today as a visiting fellow and New Century Chair in International Economics. Frankel will examine worldwide trade policies and probe the international economic impact of initiatives that address global warming.

“Jeff’s appointment will enhance the international reach of the Brookings economic research program and expand our expertise on trade policy,” said Michael H. Armacost, president of the Institution.

While in the administration, Frankel’s responsibilities included international economics, macroeconomics, industrial organization, and the environment. Before joining the administration in 1997, he was a professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

He also directed the program in international finance and macroeconomics for the National Bureau of Economic Research, and was senior fellow for the Institute of International Economics from May to September, 1996. Frankel served as senior staff economist at the Council of Economic Advisers from 1983 to 1984, and has been a visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund and the Federal Reserve Board. He has held positions at the University of Michigan, Yale University, The World Bank, and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

His recent books include: The Regionalization of the World Economy (University of Chicago Press, 1997), Financial Markets and Monetary Policy (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, 1995), The Microstructure of Foreign Exchange Markets (University of Chicago Press, 1994), and The Internationalization of Equity Markets (University of Chicago Press, 1994).

His 1991 essay Is a Yen Bloc Forming in Pacific Asia? ranked first in the AMEX Bank Review Awards. Frankel holds degrees from Swarthmore College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
