Bernard L. Schwartz Establishes Chair at Brookings

Bernard L. Schwartz, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Loral Space & Communications, has established the new Bernard L. Schwartz Chair in International Economics at The Brookings Institution, Brookings President Strobe Talbott announced today.

This commitment will allow Brookings to move quickly to recruit a senior scholar who will conduct policy research on globalization and international economics issues. Over the years, Mr. Schwartz has been recognized for his views and counsel on matters ranging from economic growth and industrial policy to technology and national security, which he has provided through speeches, white papers and testimony to private research institutions, educational groups and congressional committees.

“Bernard Schwartz has devoted his life to investing in ideas that matter, and we’re delighted to have his trust and counsel as we unravel the consequences of globalization for our nation and the world,” Talbott said. “From the impact on standards of living and competitiveness to the implications for global governance, an increasingly inter-dependent world economy requires a cross-disciplinary approach to research and policy development. Bernard’s support is enabling Brookings to be at the forefront of this effort.”

The Bernard L. Schwartz Chair in International Economics will tackle some of the hardest questions in international economics, including how to address trade, technology, intellectual property rights, and a changing relationship between developed and developing countries. The scholar who is appointed to this prestigious chair will address the multifaceted dimensions of globalization, and will also have the opportunity to conduct and publish research, organize conferences, workshops, briefings and roundtables on these issues for policymakers and the general public.

Mr. Schwartz is also a member of the Brookings Council. The prestigious Council brings together a select group of thoughtful business and community leaders who are actively engaged in the intellectual life of the Institution.
