The United States is navigating one of the most consequential strategic moments in recent history. The Trump administration has initiated the use of military force in recent months against Venezuela and Iran, while working to manage the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and navigate other global flashpoints. Amid this turbulent landscape, it has also released both a new National Defense Strategy and a National Security Strategy, raising urgent questions about the strategic vision guiding these foreign policy decisions—and about the historical lessons that should inform them.
On March 24, join the Strobe Talbott Center for Security, Strategy, and Technology at Brookings to examine the current geopolitical moment and place it in a broader strategic perspective. The discussion will draw on recent books by Brookings scholars Michael O’Hanlon and Joshua Rovner, who have published their own assessments of U.S. grand strategy and defense strategy, as well as the expertise of Mara Karlin, who was directly involved in drafting the Biden administration’s 2022 National Defense Strategy. The panel will also feature renowned British strategist Lawrence Freedman, whose new book, “On Strategists and Strategy,” offers a timely framework for this conversation.
