More than half the world’s population today lives in urban areas, and with urbanization rates rapidly increasing, urban dwellers will swell to 75 percent of the global populace by 2050. Behind increasing urbanization is an array of factors spanning the private, public, and political realms. Many of the factors fueling urban growth produce an even larger array of problems that city planners and policymakers must confront.

“Urbanized” seeks to provide insight into increasing urbanization by exploring a diverse set of urban design projects around the globe. The film sheds light on the variety and complexity of contributors who mold urban policy, including ordinary citizens, experts, and leaders. After the screening, a panel discussion was held with Gary Hustwit, the director and producer of “Urbanized”; Shaun Donovan, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Derek Douglas, special assistant to the president for urban affairs; and Bruce Katz, vice president and co-director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program.

Following the panel, the participants took questions from the audience.
