Navigating economic resilience and growth in small island states

Small island states face unique economic challenges, climate vulnerability, dependence on a narrow export base, and exposure to external shocks, while high-capital costs, transaction fees and risk-appetite barriers from lenders hinder access to affordable financing. However, these nations also host distinctive opportunities for innovation, sustainable development, and global partnerships. The West African island nation of Cabo Verde has emerged as a compelling case of political stability and human development since gaining independence in 1975, yet its economy remains vulnerable to global trade uncertainties, volatile economic growth, low productivity of the private sector and climate-related risks.

Today, in light of these challenges, Cabo Verde’s efforts to advance its “blue economy” through tourism, trade, and leveraging ocean resources are of paramount importance to its future. As Cabo Verde marks 50 years of independence in 2025, the country has seen progress in building resilience to shocks and advancing social and economic development. Recent years have seen notable economic recovery and growth, with strong economic fundamentals, good governance, and a clear national vision driving the country forward.

On Thursday, May 29, the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings Global will host a fireside chat between Brookings Senior Fellow and Director of the Africa Growth Initiative Pierre Nguimkeu and His Excellency the Prime Minister of Cabo Verde José Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva on the country’s experience, goals, and priorities.
