In his second term, President Trump has imposed or threatened to impose tariffs on many trading partners of the United States and has favored the adoption of a new system of reciprocal tariffs that would fundamentally reset U.S. trade relations. Governments across the globe are responding to American tariff actions in diverse ways, from negotiation to retaliation and diversification.
On April 14, the Center for Asia Policy Studies at Brookings and the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry hosted a webinar that addressed how key players in the world economy—like China, the EU, Japan, and Mexico—are responding to this new chapter of “America First” trade policy. Panelists discussed how American tariffs and trade policies are likely to impact bilateral, regional, and global trade relations. They also discussed likely responses from China, the EU, Japan, and Mexico and analyzed likely implications for the multilateral trading system.
