With signs that the U.S. job market is softening while inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s target, the central bank has begun cutting short-term interest rates. Ten days after the Fed’s October 22-23 policy meeting, Fed Governor Lisa Cook will address the outlook for the economy and monetary policy at the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy on November 3 at 2:00 pm. Following her remarks, she will be interviewed by Hutchins Center Director David Wessel and take questions from the audience.

Governor Cook has been a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors since May 2022 and is serving a term that ends in January 2038. Before her appointment to the Fed, she was a professor of economics and international relations at Michigan State University. She has been on the faculty of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and was a senior economist on the White House Council of Economic Advisers during President Obama’s first term. Governor Cook earned a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a Marshall Scholar at Oxford. President Trump attempted to remove Governor Cook from her seat on the board in August of this year, but federal courts blocked that effort. The case is now set to be heard by the Supreme Court.
