The Federal Reserve was created by Congress and Woodrow Wilson in 1913 amid political controversies and compromises over mistrust of Washington and big banks — echoes present in today’s political debate.
On October 22, the Hutchins Center on Fiscal & Monetary Policy at Brookings hosted a discussion with accomplished journalist and writer Roger Lowenstein, author of a new book on the birth of the Fed, “America’s Bank: The Epic Struggle to Create the Federal Reserve.” who took the lessons of history to illuminate today’s controversies over the Fed. After his presentation, Brookings scholars Donald Kohn, a former Fed vice chair, and Sarah Binder, who has been researching the politics of the Fed, joined Lowenstein in a discussion moderated by Louise Sheiner, policy director of the Hutchins Center.
