The annual Municipal Finance Conference brings together academics, practitioners, issuers, and regulators to discuss recent research on municipal capital markets and state and local fiscal issues. The conference is a joint venture of the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution, the Rosenberg Institute of Global Finance at Brandeis School of Business and Economics, the Mitch Daniels School of Business at Purdue University, and the LBJ School of Public Affairs at University of Texas at Austin. The 2026 conference will be held in person, with a livestream option for remote viewers, on July 21 and 22 at the Brookings Institution.

Impact of Inflation on Muni Market and State & Local Budgets

This breakout session will discuss the recent surge in inflation on the municipal bond market and on state and local budget conditions. Possible areas of discussion include the impact of inflation on credit quality differentiation across issuers, market sectors, and bond types; identifying characteristics of issuers that may experience particular inflation-induced strain; and the strategies that state and local governments more generally are using to manage inflationary pressures.
