Min Zaw Oo

Executive Director – Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security

Dr. Min Zaw Oo is an experienced professional in the fields of security analysis, peace processes, and political situations in Myanmar. As the Executive Director of the Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS), he leads policy research and analysis efforts, generating over 100 security assessments and publications. He also serves as a non-resident adjunct fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Security (CSIS) and a Global Fellow at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). 

Min played a critical role in Myanmar’s peace process, serving as the Executive Director of the Technical Secretariat Centre of the Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Committee, advising the Peace Commission established by the NLD-led government, and providing technical support for the negotiation of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement and 15 bilateral ceasefire agreements as the director ceasefire negotiation and implementation at Myanmar Peace Center. He also served as the Director of Research and M&E for Democracy International’s election-strengthening project in Afghanistan, as well as directing a research division at a subsidiary of US-based IDS International. Min also spent four years as an independent consultant for the Genocide Early Warning Project. 

Min earned his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University, M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown University, and B.A. from the University of Maryland. In recognition of his achievements, George Mason University awarded Min as a Distinguished Alumni Exemplar in 2018.
