The Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons, Dr. Francis M. Deng, is to visit the Sudan from 24 to 31 July 2004. Dr. Deng will hold meetings in the capital Khartoum and will travel to the Darfur region, where he is scheduled to visit sites hosting internally-displaced persons.

The mission should allow the Representative to study the situation of internal displacement in the country and to conduct a constructive dialogue with the Government, international agencies, non-governmental organizations and other relevant actors aimed at ensuring effective responses to internal displacement in the country.

At the recommendation of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Dr. Deng was appointed the Representative of the Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons in 1992.
