Budgetary turmoil imposed over the past five years has imposed a high price on the Department of Defense and therefore on the nation it serves. Robert Hale writes that government shutdowns, employee furloughs, continuing resolutions, and secondary budgets adversely affected military readiness and civilian morale. He insists the country needs a long-term and broader budget agreement that ends the threat posed by sequester cuts, shutdowns, and budget delays.
