2008 marked the 30th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up policy. But, as the country celebrates the remarkable success of the past three decades, the shadow of the global economic crisis looms large.
China’s integration into the global economy has brought it great prosperity, but it also means that China cannot remain unscathed as the global economy turns downward. Effective policy is crucial for China to manage the impacts of the crisis. As the drivers of success change, China may need to undertake a new economic transition in order to maintain a robust future.
On January 13, the John L. Thornton China Center and CAIJING Magazine will host a symposium on the challenges ahead for China in a faltering global economy. A distinguished panel of leading economists and China experts will analyze the impacts of the global economic crisis on China; the roles China will play in the restructuring and recovery of the global economy; and the prospects for China’s own economic transition in the near future. After each panel, participants will take audience questions.
