Helmut “Hal” Sonnenfeldt served in the State Department alongside Henry Kissinger, taught graduate students at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and made his mark at Brookings as a long-time scholar of U.S.-Russian affairs and American foreign policy.
