Victoria Nuland, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, joins Brookings

Washington, D.C. — The Brookings Institution is pleased to announce that former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs and former Ambassador to NATO Victoria Nuland has joined Brookings as senior advisor to the director of Foreign Policy and nonresident senior fellow.

While at Brookings, Nuland will apply her depth of expertise to produce analysis and provide ideas to boost the Foreign Policy program’s capacity to inform policy decision-making. Nuland brings to the Institution significant experience as a distinguished diplomat, with a record of working with global partners and generating solutions to address common challenges. In her new role, she will engage in the foreign policy debate, strengthen the Institution’s networks and activities, and contribute to its agenda on U.S.-Europe relations, U.S. foreign policy, security, alliances, and strategic issues. She will work closely with colleagues in the Brookings Center on the United States and Europe.

Prior to Joining Brookings, Ambassador Nuland was the chief executive officer at the Center for a New American Security. Previously, she served as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasia Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, where she led implementation of U.S. foreign policy with over 50 countries from the U.K. to Russia, and with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union (EU), and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). In her three decades of government service, she was awarded the highest diplomatic rank of career ambassador, serving as ambassador to NATO, national security advisor to the vice president, and in the office of the deputy secretary of state.
