Dalpino to Become Deputy Director of Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies

Catharin Dalpino, a Visiting Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, will become Deputy Director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies (CNAPS) at Brookings on July 1.

As Deputy Director, Dalpino will work closely with the Center’s Director, Bates Gill, on fundraising, administration, program coordination, and her own research, which includes an examination of the political impact of the Asian economic crisis.

“Dalpino’s research abilities, her administrative savvy, and her deep understanding of the political culture of Asia will add distinction to the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies,” said Michael H. Armacost, president of the Brookings Institution.

Dalpino has an extensive background in international affairs. She formerly served at the State Department as a Deputy Assistant Secretary and was a Career Officer at the Asia Foundation. She has also conducted research at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the World Bank, and has taught at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University.

Dalpino’s most recent book, Deferring Democracy: Promoting Openness in Authoritarian Regimes, will be published by Brookings Press this fall.

“Catharin Dalpino brings great knowledge of Asia and democracy-building along with practical experience in government,” said Richard Haass, Vice President and Director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution. “This appointment will further strengthen CNAPS and reinforce its capacity to provide a first-rate experience for its visiting fellows and relevant insights to those in the policy community.”

The Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies, established in 1998, aims to help shape the debate over U.S. foreign policy toward Northeast Asia, to facilitate the exchange of ideas between Americans and peoples of the Asia-Pacific region, and to provide a venue for talented individuals from the region to interact with Brookings scholars and with one another.
