Metro Monitor 2021

Metro Monitor 2021 tracks the inclusive economic growth performance of the 192 largest U.S. metro areas, which together are home to 78% of the nation’s population and contribute 84% of the nation’s GDP.

Editor’s note: Brookings Metro is not publishing a Metro Monitor in 2022 (with data through 2020) due to the acute and partially temporary impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on metropolitan economies, and on the quality of American Community Survey data collected that year, which undergird many of the Monitor’s indicators. We will publish a new edition of the Monitor in early 2023, based on trends through 2021. In the meantime, you may be interested in pandemic-era economic data and trends from our Metro Recovery Index, updated through spring 2022.
