Searching for peace in post-Qaddafi Libya

Libya has faced many challenges following the end of Muammar Qaddafi’s 42-year dictatorship in 2011. In a new book, “Libya Since Qaddafi: Chaos and the Search for Peace,” Brookings expert Stephanie Williams outlines the conflict and division of the post-Qaddafi period and offers bold approaches to Libya’s fragmentation. Williams draws on her experience as a United Nations mediator and senior American diplomat—bearing witness to pivotal events including General Haftar’s attack on Tripoli in 2019 and the ceasefire agreement in October 2020—to provide fresh thinking on achieving peace and stability for the Libyan people.

On Wednesday, June 25, join the Foreign Policy program at Brookings for an analytical discussion on Libya’s fragmentation and efforts toward peace and reconciliation after 2011. Stephanie Williams, Brookings nonresident senior fellow and former special adviser on Libya to the U.N. secretary-general, will be joined in conversation by Jeffrey Feltman, Brookings John C. Whitehead visiting fellow in international diplomacy and former under-secretary-general for political affairs at the United Nations.
