Know your rival, know yourself
On May 26, the 21st Century Defense Initiative at Brookings hosted General James F. Amos, commandant of the United States Marine Corps, for a discussion of the future of the Marine Corps as it takes on the fiscal and operational challenges of the decades to come. General Amos was joined by Brookings Senior Fellow Michael O’Hanlon who recently returned from Afghanistan. They shared their insights on how the Marine Corps fits into the current operational puzzle and presented a broader discussion on how the Corps conceptualizes future operational demands in a time of certain fiscal austerity.
General James F. Amos is the highest ranking officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is a marine aviator and is widely considered to be one of the Marine Corps’ most innovative thinkers on future combat. He also serves as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Senior Fellow Michael O’Hanlon, director of research for Foreign Policy at Brookings and author of The Science of War (Princeton University Press, 2009), will provide introductory remarks and moderate the discussion.
