On July 29, the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings hosted U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Michael Froman for a conversation about trade, development, and how U.S. trade policy, including the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), must adapt to shifts in the global economic landscape.  With economic development high on the agenda of the upcoming U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, Ambassador Froman will outline how the United States can chart a more comprehensive path toward broad-based, inclusive growth in the 21st Century.

Ambassador Froman was sworn in as the 11th United States Trade Representative on June 21, 2013. He previously served at the White House as Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs and as the U.S. Sherpa for the G-20 and G-8 Summits.

Kemal Derviş, vice president of the Global Economy and Development Program, provided introductory remarks after which Ambassador Froman made a keynote address. Brookings Senior Fellow Dr. Amadou Sy then moderated a discussion.
