November 5 will mark one year until the 2014 midterm Congressional elections. Given the narrow margins of majorities in both houses of Congress, the elections will determine the direction of policymaking and the political environment for the remainder of the Obama presidency. As next November draws near, key questions must be answered: What does the landscape look like one year out from Election Day 2014? How has a threat of default and an extended government shutdown changed the midterm election calculus? How might the midterms affect upcoming fiscal battles?
On November 5, the Center for Effective Public Management at Brookings hosted an event to discuss the lead up to and the impact of the upcoming midterm Congressional elections. What will the primaries foreshadow for the general election? What can the two parties do to improve their chances of holding or gaining legislative majorities? A panel of experts sought to provide answers to these questions and preview what will be a year of contentious political battles.
