WATCH: What are the key ingredients to scaling quality learning?

Schoolgirls queue up to receive from authorities at government school in Mumbai

The goal of the Millions Learning project is to catalyze a discussion about how to scale up quality education more rapidly and equitably in low- and middle- income countries. Building off the previous videos, Why focus on scaling learning for children and youth in developing countries? and What are different pathways for scaling up quality learning?, in this third crayon video we discuss the 14 underlying factors—core ingredients—that contribute to scaling quality education.

These 14 ingredients fall into four broad categories:

  1. Improving learning at scale requires good design, with committed leaders designing for scale from the beginning.
  2. Scaling education also requires a focus on delivery, paying attention to the operational realities of implementing at large scale.

Finance is also key, not only having enough funding, but also ensuring it is smartly structured and allocated.
Finally, an enabling environment plays a key role in facilitating or impeding the process of scaling.

Our 14 case studies illustrate how these ingredients, in different combinations depending on the context, play an essential role in scaling quality education.
