Brown Center publishes 14th report on American education with focus on reading gender gap, the Common Core, and student engagement

The Brown Center on Education Policy at Brookings has published the 14th report in its series, “The Brown Center Report on American Education: How Well Are American Students Learning?” In this 2015 edition, author Tom Loveless, a senior fellow, examines three subjects:

  • The gender gap in reading, in both the U.S. and internationally. Find out why Finland, which scores so high on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), has the largest gender gap of any PISA participant.
  • Measuring effects of the Common Core State Standards, specifically on reading achievement and the English Language Arts standards of the CCSS.
  • Student engagement, using data from the PISA, and measuring how U.S. students compare to their global peers.
